About This Event

Description

In a world of constant light and constant noise, the nervous system rarely gets to rest. Dark retreat, an ancient practice preserved in Buddhist and shamanic lineages, offers a counterintuitive remedy: stepping into total darkness to restore balance, clarity and a deeper kind of seeing. This spiritual workshop at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA, brings that practice into the present day with Andrew Holecek and cognitive scientist Mark Miller.

Traditionally, dark retreat means spending time, from hours to weeks, in a completely dark cabin or cave. It has been practiced for healing, insight, creativity and preparation for the end of life. Essentially a concentrated form of meditation, it is a way of exploring the depths of the unconscious mind. Here it is offered as an accessible introduction, grounded in neuroscience, psychological modeling and philosophical frameworks rather than presented as an exotic technique.

For the seeker who feels overstimulated, distracted or out of touch with themselves, this weekend in Big Sur offers a way to slow down and come back into contact with body, mind and world.

What to Expect

The workshop is experiential, and it moves between direct practice and exploration of the ideas behind it.

- Morning sessions: Using an eye mask, you will discover how darkness can restore your nervous system and bring your body and mind into equilibrium.
- Afternoon sessions: Simple visual exercises curtail sensory overload and help realign your sense faculties.
- Throughout: The teachers investigate how dark retreat works with the unconscious mind and what actually takes place at the neurological level.

The teaching also speaks to what the organizers call the meta-crisis, a crisis of touch. Blinded by the light of distraction and immersed in the dangers of AI, we have lost touch with ourselves, with one another and with the planet. Going into the dark is offered as a way to return to that contact and reclaim our humanity.

Recommended reading includes Total Eclipse of the Mind: Unleashing the Power of Darkness for Creativity, Healing, and Transformation by Andrew Holecek, and Consciousness at the Edge of Death: Dark Retreat, Near Death Experience, and Generative Brain Dynamics by Mark Miller et al.

About Andrew Holecek

Andrew Holecek is a Buddhist meditation teacher who has completed the traditional three-year Buddhist retreat, and he is the author of Total Eclipse of the Mind, a book on using darkness for creativity, healing and transformation. He co-leads this workshop with cognitive scientist Mark Miller, co-author of Consciousness at the Edge of Death, pairing contemplative experience with a scientific perspective on the brain in darkness.

FAQs

Not in a cabin or cave. The workshop is described as an accessible introduction, so each morning you use an eye mask to experience how darkness can restore your nervous system and balance your body-mind. Traditional dark retreat, which runs from hours to weeks in a fully dark space, is explained as the background to that practice.
Afternoons use simple visual exercises meant to curtail sensory overload and realign your sense faculties. Throughout the workshop, Andrew Holecek and Mark Miller also look at how dark retreat works with the unconscious mind and what takes place at the neurological level.
It is both. The organizer describes it as experiential, combining hands-on practice with neuroscience, psychological modeling, and philosophical frameworks. It treats dark retreat as an ancient spiritual and shamanic practice that science is now recognizing as an antidote to modern stressors.
Esalen lists two recommended books. One is Total Eclipse of the Mind: Unleashing the Power of Darkness for Creativity, Healing, and Transformation by Andrew Holecek. The other is Consciousness at the Edge of Death: Dark Retreat, Near Death Experience, and Generative Brain Dynamics by Mark Miller et al.
